Virtual Café: Artists in the Field and by the Water
November 17, 2026, 1:00-2:00pm EST — FREE
Through OBFS, Nancy Lowe coordinates Ecotones, a network of field stations and marine labs with arts programs (or interested in starting one). Recently, Nancy authored the Ecotones Guide for Arts at Field Stations and Marine Labs, 2nd edition. At this virtual meeting, Nancy will present an introduction to this work at the intersection of art, science, and the environment. We will also hear from representatives of the international organization, walk · listen · create, who support “walking artists and artist walkers.”

Nature Patternbook:
exploring nature as creative partner
Artists, scientists, and designers have long looked to the natural world not just as a subject, but as a source of ideas. In this workshop, we use close observation of nature, its patterns, relationships, and strategies as inspiration for creative thinking. You’ll leave with your own handmade Nature Patternbook, as well as a collection of creative and investigative practices you can apply to your work and life. No art or science experience is necessary — just bring your curiosity!
Art-Science Borderlands:
creative thinking across disciplines
Are you an artist who would like to engage more deeply with science? Or a scientist interested in developing a creative practice, collaborating with artists, or exploring work across disciplines? This workshop is for anyone curious about or interested in developing a practice or project across art and science. Through examples and guided exercises, you’ll explore how to find a fruitful question, work with others in different disciplines, and identify possible directions for your own art-science practice or project.
